How many desktop 3D printers are in the wild?

Someone asked me this, and I decided to look into it. Lets try to dig up some numbers.

MakerBot – I could write a whole post about MakerBot, why they are terrible, why you should never buy one. But I don’t have to, because someone already did that. Lets just say they are expensive, unreliable and knowingly sold printers with defective extruders for over a year. Sadly, they are also the best known brand and have a great PR team. In April 2016 MakerBot celebrated their 100,000 sale.
